So if items are being really unkind to you, don’t be afraid to do this! You may not be able to win when the items decide to hate you, but you can at least cut your losses considerably with smart play. While many builds at max rank seek to enable your chocobo to accelerate continuously throughout a race, if you slow down just a little bit from that, your stamina economy really increases incredibly dramatically. Furthermore, rarer items will come more often later from boxes, so hanging out in the back might get you something really useful like a Hero Tonic or a Choco Meteor.ĭon’t Be Afraid to Conserve (Even in Max-Rank Racing)! If you’re in the second to fourth place range, you’re generally subject to a lot of negative items and abilities, but if you’re in the back, opponents are less able to disrupt you with their items. The other concept to know about places is it’s generally better to be either in first place or towards the back of the pack. You don’t have nearly as much control over this when you’re not in first place, so make good use of it. Another example might be if a box has a Bacchus’s Water and then a Graviball – in this case, you could pick which one you want to be subject to, based on your stamina situation, by either taking the Bacchus’s Water (which subjects you to the Graviball) or leaving the box alone (which subjects you to the Bacchus’s Water). As long as the second place player isn’t close to you, you won’t have to worry about them using the Briar on you.

For instance, if the item box ahead of you is about to give a Bacchus’s Water and then a Briar Caltrop, you can deny your opponent the ability to use the Water on you by taking it first. Since you can see what item boxes will produce first and second, you can use your first-place position to choose what items are used on you. It means you’re winning, right? It also can allow you a lot of control over items. For example, unless an item box’s contents can really help you, it’s better to avoid boxes that require you to take a turn wide, as doing this will slow you down.īeing in first place is nice. Obviously, certain courses have hazards you’ll want to avoid, so the perfect route may vary, but you should always be looking for the shortest route possible. It also helps with stamina conservation, as it gets you through the course faster while your stamina drains at the same rate. You have control over where your chocobo strafes on the course, so use it to shorten the distance your chocobo has to travel and you will improve your times. Unlike in Final Fantasy XII, chocobo racing is not “on rails” in this game.

Eventually, clearing challenges will allow you to purchase higher rank skill manuals, which is important!īear in mind that the one-time MGP bonus you receive from your first clear of these challenges is affected by MGP income modifiers, such as Free Company buffs and buffs from Grand Company Squadron missions! Normally, clearing all of the challenges nets you a total of 445,000 MGP, so if you make sure to have an MGP buff up whenever you clear them, you can significantly increase the amount of MGP you receive from clearing them!

Not only does beating them for the first time net you a nice MGP haul, but clearing the challenges also expands the selection of available skill manuals you can buy from the Tack & Feed Trader standing to the left of the registration desk in Chocobo Square. That MGP isn’t going anywhere!Īll this said, beating these challenges is quite worth it. Don’t feel the need to delay breeding your chocobos or otherwise progressing if there’s a challenge you just can’t seem to beat yet. If you are finding that you are significantly outclassed for a challenge you qualify for, you can always come back to it later once you have a higher rating.

As such, make sure you prioritize your offensive item usage to interfere with those racers as much as you can! Without much interference, these red racers will typically be leading the pack, so you either need to interfere with them significantly, have better stats than them, or have a particularly good run yourself in order to win. Rather, the clear condition is only that you place ahead of all racers with red names.

In order to clear the challenges, it is not necessary that you come in first place. These are normal races that occur on one of the three courses, except with some new AI racers that have red names. Chocobo challenges are trials that are available periodically for you to undertake as you progress in your racing career.
